Strengthening Natural Resource Governance in the Racha Georgia – Policy Paper
This policy paper synthesizes key findings on three resource sectors in Racha – hunting, timber, and minerals – drawing on the 2025 Assessment of Legislation and Practices Governing Natural Resource Extraction prepared by the Society for Nature Conservation – SABUKO. It examines how inconsistent laws, governance gaps, and poor enforcement in these sectors undermine both biodiversity and local well-being.
Legislation and Practice Related to the Extraction of Natural Resources
This report describes the legislation and practice related to the extraction of natural resources, specifically hunting, timber harvesting, and mineral extraction. The aim of the research is to identify the legal and institutional factors that affect biodiversity conservation and landscape integrity. This will allow us to use the research findings in the preparation of a large-scale project for restoring landscape ecological connectivity and key habitats.
Understanding Human-Wildlife Conflict on the Iori Plateau
This study aims to explore human-wildlife conflict on the Iori Plateau, analyzing the nature and extent of these conflicts, with a particular focus on livestock predation and the perceptions of local farmers. By examining the spatial and temporal patterns of HWC and evaluating the effectiveness of current management strategies, the research seeks to contribute to more sustainable coexistence approaches that benefit both the local communities and wildlife populations.
Forest Governance Assessment in Georgia
This research, addressing the period after the implementation of the Forest Code in 2020, seeks to foster an open and inclusive dialogue to enhance forest governance and management in Georgia.
Review of Legislation & Practices Related to Natural Resource Management
The paper examines agricultural land management practices on the Iori plateau. The study aims to assess the extent to which legal acts and policy documents currently in force in Georgia facilitate sustainable land and pasture management, while ensuring the prevention or reduction of threats that impact natural resources.
THE FINDINGS FROM HYDROMETRIC ASSESSMENTS – IORI RIVER – JUNE
On June 15, 2024, hydrometric assessments were conducted at the existing hydrological stations along the lower and upper reaches of the Dali mountain reservoir on the Iori River. During these assessments, water discharge measurements were taken, the water flow morphometric characteristics were recorded, and sediment samples were collected from the surface water and river bed.

Desertification is a complex and dynamic phenomenon that requires a holistic and integrated approach to address it. It is not only an environmental issue, but also a social, economic, and political one. It affects not only the drylands, but also the whole planet. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all stakeholders, including governments, organisations, communities, and individuals, to work together to combat desertification, and to promote sustainable development and environmental justice.
Challenges of Planning and Implementation of Infrastructure Projects in Georgia
Data analysis of socio-economic questionnaire
According to our research, a significant proportion of interviewed farmers are unfamiliar with rotational grazing practices, with a considerable majority expressing a lack of enthusiasm to adopt this technique despite our explanations. Pasture condition assessments indicate that the majority of respondents perceive their pastures as normal, surprisingly despite this attitude, a notable percentage provide additional feed to their livestock. Concerns regarding equipment, infrastructure, and challenges in sheep farming were also highlighted by participants.
Results of hydrometric works carried out at hydrological stations on the Iori river
On December 9-10, 2023, geodetic and hydrometric works were carried out at recently opened hydrological stations in the downstream and upstream of the Dali Mountain reservoir on the Iori River. The document collects and summarizes the results of the work.

Illegal killing is one of the main risks for the birds becoming extinct globally.Poaching birds became one of the major threats for bird migrating between Europe and Africa. Every autumn more than 1,000,000+ birds of prey migrate through the Batumi Bottleneck. Batumi Raptor Count (BRC) along with SABUKO work on monitoring and conserve birds which migrate through the Batumi Bottleneck.

In spring 2015 the Chorokhi river delta (Ajara, Georgia) South of the city of Batumi survey was held by Rinse van der Vliet on behalf of the Dutch Avifaunistic Circle (AKN), section of the Netherlands Ornithologists Union, which mainly is an overview of the bird observations in and around the Chorokhi delta (from here on the ‘delta’) in the period from 30 April to 8 May and from 12 to 13 May 2015.

This document presents a description and assessment of Iori River Gallery Forest, definition of their natural boundaries, comparison with the present boundaries and identification of causes of changes
Assessment Report of Iori River Gallery Forest
The objective of the research was to describe and evaluate condition of the Iori River Gallery forests, define their natural borders, compare with present-day boundaries and to identify causes of change; also, to identify whether or not the Dali reservoir reduced the area of gallery forests in Chachuna Managed Reserve and whether it effected to the change of their floristic composition.
Birds in the Chorokhi delta in spring 2018
In spring 2018, SABUKO (Society for Nature Conservation) carried out monitoring birds of the Chorokhi river delta (Ajara, Georgia), South of the city of Batumi. Monitoring was carried out by Zurab Gurgenidze and Dachi Shoshitashvili, who are currently employed by SABUKO. Monitoring was carried out from 2nd of April till 12th of April of 2018.
Assessment of the Feasibility of Restoring Wild Ungulates in Racha
The primary objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of restoring wild ungulates—specifically the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus maral) and the European Bison (Bison bonasus) in Racha (Racha and Likhi Ridges) through conservation translocation.
Participatory Landscape Conservation and Restoration Vision: A Stakeholder-Based Research in Racha
Today’s environmental challenges climate change, biodiversity loss, soil and forest degradation, and water scarcity are too complex to be solved by traditional conservation methods alone. These issues require new, broader approaches that go beyond the boundaries of protected areas and include the landscapes where people live and work.
Scoping study of grasslands regeneration potential
The main objective of this study is to develop a monitoring protocol to assess the current ecological condition and the regeneration potential of grasslands that face bush and tree encroachment.
Understanding Human-Wildlife Conflict in Racha
The main goals for this study are diverse: to understand community attitudes and knowledge toward wildlife; to identify the types of HWC currently present and the species involved; to grasp local perceptions toward the conflict and the institutions responsible for HWC policy; to estimate the barriers HWC poses to restoration efforts; and finally, to investigate community attitudes towards potentially reintroduced ungulate species, specifically the European bison and red deer.
